experience and opinions of single plate shear conn. of steel beam 1

I was wondering what other structural engineers view of single plate shear connections is and what issues have arisen in the field when these have been used? What are your added concerns and opinions? Is this type of connection conservative enough for your comfort in design?

What is your preferred connection for simple shear and why?

Recommended for you

Very good connection for simple or moment connected beam to take care of shear. Sheat plate is economical and easy for shop and erection. I use it 75 % of all shear connections.
For larger reactions I am using double angles.

Single plate shear connections are the most common connection type in my area (Seattle, USA). The design is based on research by Astaneh, Richard, et al. Background information can be found in the 1990 Steel Tips article on AISC's website at
