Explanation of UG 10 (ASME Sec VIII Div.1) 2

I have read it again and again but could not sort the main concepts behind UG-10 (a) and (b). Please guide me, as to what are the main differences and how to apply them. I have some concept about UG-10 (c). The code language is the main hindrance.

The ASME Code stands for Always-Shall-Maybe-Except. Now that we have that out of the way, let’s see what UG-10 (a) and (b) refer to;

(a) this section pertains to material that does not have a listed material specification or was purchased to chemical composition requirements - for example a 1020 carbon steel plate. This section states that use of the above material is permitted to be used under a material specification within ASME Section VIII, Div 1 provided the requirements of (1)(a)-(d) or (2) (a)-(f), which follow are followed.

The paragraph titles are self explanatory for (1) Recertification by an Organization other than the Vessel or Part Manufacturer. For example a lab can do this activity. So, using the same example, this plate could be re-certified to an accepted material specification – SA 105 provided the material specification requirements are met and requirements of (1) or (2) are met.

For (2) the recertification is being done by the vessel or part manufacturer.

I believe the requirements in (1) and (2) are self explanatory;
-chemical analysis is required by the material manufacturer and is shown to meet the permitted specification,
- certification by the organization taking responsibility for re-certification that the material was manufactured and tested per the material specification that it will conform to for re-certification, etc.

what about UG 10 b? (material Identified to a particular production lot as required by a specification permitted by this division but which cannot be qualified under UG 10 a

UG-10 b refers to material which has been procured to a particular lot of material (traceable by markings), which the material specification is permitted, except the particular lot of material has no pedigree papers. If this is the case, you can follow (1) or (2) below to allow the purchased material to be re-certified and acceptable for use.
