I am using Ansys 13 to run an explicit dynamic analysis on a pipe coupling assembly before the Hylon N10113sthl(nylon w/ 13% fiber) couplings are manufactured. Attached is a picture of the model and the assembly file(igs). There is a ram that displaces in the -y direction through the assembly and is ramped from 0" to -3". Almost all the defaults remain unaltered except mass scaling is on with min. cfl time step = 1E-7. Although the solver fails after a while, I get realistic results when I select structural steel as the material for all of the parts, but when I choose the explicit material POLYETH. for the couplings, the ram acts as if its shooting through the sleeve and couplings like a bullet. I thought this has to do with the end time (0.0005s) and the displacement (3in) which would equal a velocity of 340mph, but nothing except the material has been changed between the two models. I can't understand why the ram shoots through the sleeve when I am using POLYETH. couplings and acts realistically when using steel couplings.
