I'm trying to understand cases where one would prefer explosion cladding over roll bonding. I'm not an expert - I'm just trying to understand the differences between the two processes. I know there are some cases where you have to use explosion clad (like titanium to steel) ... but are there cases where you have a choice?

Primarily, availability, schedule and costs dictate preference of one over the other.

What about metal thickness? Is there a thickness where explosion clad becomes dramatically more competitive?

You need to contact DMC. They an explosion clad house, but they have written extensive papers on the economics as a function of alloy, thickness, and plate size.

southp, it is not uncommon for a mill to roll bond clad plate two at a time, clad face to clad face, therefore you may have to buy two plates. When only one is needed, explosion bond is an option.

Also, I would guess that explosion bond is not a good option for thin backer plate.

There are many factors that go into the selection.

Mike
