External Power Cable - Code - Black, Red etc.. is it a standard UK or convention

Hopefully this is ok to ask.

Id like to validate that its only a convention in the UK that electrical cables are black and red above a certain voltage etc..

from what i can tell its what is normally done .. not a standard otherwise this is only cable colour you would normally get
 
I have the following opinion for your consideration.
1. UK is a member of IEC and is obliged to adopt the IEC standard. IEC standards prevail not only in Europe, including others; India, China, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore etc...
2. For LV (1kVac 1.5kVdc), the IEC colour code ( ), in brief
For AC: Line 1 (Brown), Line 2 (Black), Line 3 (Grey), Neural (Blue), Earth (Green-yellow).
3. Please Google for further details. This IEC colour code prevails for more than a decade.

For the sheath colors i suppose there are only national standards. For example in italy we have the CEI UNEL 00721 that indicates the colors.
