Dear,

Can someone tell me how to calculate the computed longitudinal compressive stress which will be compared witch the value of the B factor outlined in the ASME BPV code UG-23(b) and why (b) is only concerned by The maximum allowable longitudinal compressive stress and non by The maximum allowable circumferential compressive stress ?

The computed long.compr.stress is what you calculate as the stress in the vessel wall corresponding to the loading state you are examining. A common use of this procedure is with a tall vessel (tower) subject to wind or earthquake loading together with internal pressure or vacuum.
For the circumferential compressive stress you go to UG-28.

Usually calculated as F/A.

F may be zero, A may not.
