I am looking at spinnning some very lightweight stuff in a large range from say 1 rpm to 500 rpm. I want a DC motor but I know that I won't be able to get below a certain point if I get a 5000 rpm motor. I am thinking of using a gearbox to get down that low, but am looking for suggestions on any off the shelf motors and/or gearboxes for this application. Also, this is a small sized application, Not looking for huge industiral motors, something a couple inches in diameter.

Please Help!

Take a look at what Minarik has available. look at their website then contact them directly.

I designed and produced many of the subfractional designs listed by Minarik. They have AC and DC subfractional gearmotors of various descriptions.

If you go with DC, try to incorporate current limiters in the circuits. Stall torque is much higher than operating torque, unlike AC gearmotors. Experiment with various current limiter ranges to get the right response and protection. Good luck.

Maybe consider a brushless servo motor or direct-drive rotary stage - especially if your looking for high accels/decels and velocity stability.
