An owner has requested the use of TC bolts on a project, but if I use the most economical connections the erector will not be able to get the special wrench (not even the S-80EZA short barrel wrench) to fit on one of the rows of bolts in a connection that has several rows of bolts.
1) Is it ok to mix F1852 bolts with A325 bolts in a connection as long as the A325's are fully tightened using the turn-of-the-nut method? I've looked at the ASTM Specifications of F1852 and A325 and they have identical tensile strengths and proof loads but I can't find any documentation that says it is ok to mix them in a connection.
2) If F1852 bolts with hex heads are used, is it ok to tighten them using the turn-of-the-nut method? If so, then is it ok to have one row tightened using turn-of-the-nut and the other rows tightened using the electric wrench?
I've looked through the RCSC specs, the AISC specs, AISC DG 17 and the SSTC's "Structural Bolting Handbook" but can't find anything that addresses these questions. I will be providing guidance on my erection drawings so that the erector wan't have any questions but I also will need to be able to satisfy the curious mind of the inspector. Any assistance would be appreciated.
