I posted this in the AISC Code forum. The reply I received was cogent and validated my thoughts on the AISC Check list but I was hoping for more thoughts from the experts.
I am to conduct an audit of a steel fabrication shop as required by the IBC special inspections section and per the structural engineer of records (SER). I am an AWS CWI, I am sure of my ability to audit the welding/welder part of their records. Do you use a check list for the remaining AISC part of the audit process?
I have been to AISC's web site and have their certification check list but that seems much too broad (read: intrusive) for an audit per IBC.
If you were acting as SER what would you want to to see from an fab shop audit and what would you feel comfortable forwarding to the building official?
Thank you for you time and assistance with this.

The best way to test something is to squeeze it, slowly, until it breaks!
