A fabricator that we do not usually deal with is going to go ahead with fabrication using IFA drawings, as we have refused to submit IFC drawings until we get stamped engineering drawings. They went ahead with fabrication to meet their erection deadline. Though, the IFA drawings were submitted a week late, so they opted out to skip the process and proceed on the IFA drawings. How should one usually deal with a situation like this?

If he does not already, you better let at least the Structural Engineer and Architect of record know, if not the local jurisdiction, and in writing. I'm sure that any changes between the IFA and final Stamped sets will need to be verified in the field, or sooner... They are definitely walking the plank on their own here.

Perhaps the risk of having to redo some components outweighs the gain of meeting the schedule - $$$$$. (As long as the shop delays for any redos don't affect the job schedule)

I have had to deal with this before as well. Generally we increase inspections if there are changes between issues of drawings (checking all that has changed) and notify everyone involved in writing immediately.

As Mike said, cost is the big issue. Providing the appropriate parties are aware of what is going on, this should be an issue between the owner and fabricator though.
