I'm trying to spec. out a starter for a exahust fan.

I know the following:

20 HP
2 speed
3 phase
40A breaker
600VAC

What else do I need to know to spec out the starter? What does one typically need to konw when specifying starters for motors?

Recommended for you

Type: Automatic or manual, Magnetic, electronic, reduced volage and there are many type of reduced voltage (solid state, star delta, VFD) etc.

Reversing or not

Combinaiton or not: Breaker or fuse or none.

Control transformer if needed

Protection if any needed like phase monior

Enclosure type: Indoor/Outdoor and special NEMA type

Accessories like Hand-off-Auto switch

Even type of push buttons if you need any special.

All depends on your application.

I recommend investing in Standard guide specs from AIA Masterspecs or CSI and use them as guide. The normally list most common options to choose from.

Also revivewing manufacturers catalogs and available options will shed some light.
