Fastening - Steel Studs to Wood

Hey guys,

I'm wondering what you folks think is the best option for fastening a steel stud track to a wood ply. I've looked into LAG screws but some of the sources say to not use them in steel studs. Any of the self-drilling screws that I've looked at don't specify a strength into wood.

Also, does anyone know of a manufacturer that provides clips to fasten wood to steel or steel to wood? I've contacted Simpson and they have a single clip that is specified for both, but it's not applicable for my needs.

Self drilling screws do not work in wood - unless they are the zip-in for really light gage stuff.
Sometimes it is easiest to pre-drill the track and use wood screws

Self drilling screws are used in metal where you need a drill bit like tip to engage the screw. They are not appropriate for wood. Lag screws are overkill. I only see them in 2x members or larger, never through plywood alone. I'd suggest using wood screws. XR250 beat me to it by 2 minutes.

Would the loads provided in that document be applicable to non-plywood applications? I'm fastening the top track of a steel stud wall to an end wall wood truss bottom chord.

In that case I would maybe use screws into wood members capacities per say Simpson with SDS and use SSMA documents for pullover and shear of the steel studs.
