FAT32 or NTFS?

My I.T. guy seems to think that there is no reason why we should switch our computers to NTFS, even though we are all running windows XP. I find it a pain in the butt when my system crashes and i have to wait for the OS to do its checks before logging in. I've always had NTFS systems at my other jobs which seems to be more stable and a little more secure.
Is there any proof out there that i can present to my I.T. guy to switch to NTFS in our engineering group?

Fat will give you more wasted disk space and a less stable system enviornment. Most comp tech sites will give you the basics on that, sounds more like your IT guy is just being stubborn.

Sounds more like your IT guy shouldn't be an IT guy ... NTFS should be a "no-brainer" unless your network involves DOS programs & even then there are ways around that limitation.

NTFS is much better for managing disk space (of course if you store stuff on the network this doesn't make a difference). NTFS will also let you assign permissions on files and folders on your hard drive, whereas FAT32 won't.

However, FAT32 will let you boot from a DOS rescue disk, and some Ghosting software (particularly old stuff) may only work with FAT32.

Of course, if you have to convert from FAT32 to NTFS it takes time to backup your hard drive, update, and so on and may even require a rebuild. This is likely the source of your resistance from the IT folks.

If the IT at your company is any good at all, they can have your machine down and back up and running within or less than a day.

I can do that with mine and that is in between calls all day long, plus I don't have the cushy job of and IT admin.

Yes there are times it's not cushy, but most of the time I have ever seen IT they are busy playing Quake over the network.

I agree, I strongly believe in NTFS...and so have my previous companies i've worked for! He says he has problems formating it when the harddrive is ntfs...I don't understand why!
Anyway, i'm going to convert this machine as soon as i get a chance! *grin*
