Hi there folks!

I have this tube with reinforced steel plates on 4 sides. The plates helps big time and lessen the stress concentration for about 40% less. My only concern is, the max stress is still higher than the yield and tensile strength of the material. There's only few things I can do with it because it will go into a 8" X 6" socket.

In academic study, I will conclude this as "FAILURE" or "IT WILL FAIL". My question now is interpreting the results that I got.
Does it mean failure? break? or something else? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes it'll fail tho quite why you need FEA to tell you that then M/I=s/y would do the same in one line. No pretty picture tho.

Can you enlighten me what equation is that? it's been a while the last time I did statics and strengths of materials 😅 Thanks!
 
you're running linear elastic FEA, yes? Your peak stress is highly localised, yes? so that would produce localised yielding which you could detrmine with a non-linear FEA, or maybe a Neuber analysis (which takes your linear stress and determines a plastic stress) ... google "Neuber Plastic strain", go to the Abbott Aerospace site (they're always good).

Your tube is square ? Did you weld the plates to the tube ? How do you know the welds are up for it ?? (Stress Analysis is not just pretty pictures.)
