Hi,

As I am not experienced at all in FEA simulations, I would like to ask you if commercially available FEA software has capabilities to run 2 simulations I am interested in:

1) Running a tube through another tube with larger ID than OD of the first one. I am interested here how much force I have to push the tube with to go through the bend and before I over-stress the tube.

2) Pressurising a tube filled with fluid to such a level that a valve/rupture disc placed underneath the tube breaks. I am interested in fluid wave propagation and pressure increase under the tube.

I am not interested here in getting solutions of the 2 mentioned problems. I would just like to know if it is possible to simulate such scenarios in a software such as SolidWorks, SolidEdge or Inventor.

Thank you for your feedback!

I don't think that you can solve these tasks with the capabilities of those CAD-integrated tools.

Task #1 is highly nonlinear contact problem. I would even think, that an advanced implicit solver will have issues with that. An explicit solver could be the best way to solve that.

I'm not sure I've really understood task #2. But having damage/failure in the structure is already something, that requires an advanced solver.

FEA should be able to do both. However, the commercially FEA package may not handle those straightforwardly. You could either get customized FEA software to solve such problems or use commercial FEA package to solve with some assumptions. I am afraid that CAD-embedded simulator cannot work well with those scenarios.

For 1), large sliding contact and nonlinear material (maybe) involved, the solver must be very robust to simulate such process, particularly at the bending area after finite sliding.

For 2), it seems that the problem can be decomposed into two aspects, one is the magnitude of pressure/force that can break the tube which is more structural related, another is the fluid level that can generate certain pressure, which is all about fluid.

from my personal experience, it is without a doubt the current market-leading simulation software commercially available is Ansys.
Although there is other more advanced, more powerful simulation software such as Openfoam, in my personal opinion Ansys offers an unparalleled usability that is unmatched by any other commercial software available out there.

The capabilities of Ansys AIM is suitable for practically all the required steps involved in an upfront CFD engineering analysis simulation —from the initial 3D CAD model setup, meshing and rendering of the physics solution — it enables its users to conduct a reliable and accurate engineering simulation in all major areas, such as thermal modeling, fluid, electromagnetic simulation, structural verification and multiphysics simulations.
