Hello my name is alastair and I am new to the forum so, Hello!

I am currently out on a job at a Standby power generator that hasnt been started in 6 years!
Its a containerised Fg Wilson generator.
Engine is a perkins 3000 series V style.
500KVA
Control module is a genpart 6000 (Never encountered this style of module)

So, to cut it short.

I arrive on site to which the site contact explains the generator was disconected from the ac mains 6 years ago alongs with the batteries to start it.
They want to get it running again and mount it on an articulated lorry so they can have mobile backup power between sites, so there wont be any need for a means of ac mains for a battery charger or water jacket heater.

I connect the two batteries in series to give 24v to the starter motor and dc system.
Genpart 6000 lights up for 1 sec then dulls with loads of square boxes on screen?
There is a 4 way rotary switch. 1 being off, 2 being auto, 3 being test and 4 being run.
nothing happens when they are switched?
I did not try to jump the starter incase I had no control over the governance of the engine plus it probally wouldnt have started anyway with the fuel solenoid being closed.

So my questions are:
#1 what would you do in this situation ?
#2 Where to start?
#3 Ever done anything like this before during installations?

The gen part 6000 might be broken ect but Would that stop the engine from starting? as it is started by a rotary switch independant of the module.

thanks please help me.

Step 1: Get some heat on the generator end to ensure that the windings are dry. This may take a day or more.
Do not attempt to start the set until you get good megger readings on the windings.
Step 2: Remove the circuit boards from the control panel and clean and dry the boards.
Step 3: Reinstall the circuit boards.
Step 4: Inspect the control wiring for corroded or loose connections.
Step 5: Reconnect the batteries and check for proper voltage supplying the control panel.
Step 6: Try again to start the set with the control panel.
For an example of the possible consequence of starting a set that has been sitting for a few years see:

Thanks for replying.

The generator end was dry as it has been sat in a container
However, Moisture may have accumulated inside the generator
and circuit boards in the control panel over the six years it sat inside the container.

I have found out that apparantley the gen part 6000 control module is obsolete, so if it is faulty I will have to replace with something along the lines of a (Deep Sea Electronics Control Module)

never replaced a module before so I take it I would be reprogramming the Inputs and outputs.

Il post some pics of inside the control panel and tell me what you make of it.
Im having trouble finding where the 24v enters the panel.

Thanks

As Bill says, don't try to start the unit until you make sure the generator end is ok.

As I remember the Genpart 6000 was a branded Woodward EGCP-1, does it look like this,
There were a lot of different control configurations on the FG Wilson packages, mostly depending on where the unit was originally destined to go, but most units did have the Manual start option that allowed for an engine start without the control panel active.

Maybe some pictures or more details on your unit would help.

Here is a picture of the front of the control panel.
I will certainly make sure the generator end is dry before start up.

Do I need the woodward genpart 6000 controller to work to actually start the generator ?
I assume all the controller does is monitor the mains input and gives me run time details?

Could I manually start by engaging the rotary switch ?

Thanks guys for helping out.

So your picture looks like the older 6200 control panel assembly. Usually the engine will start and run by turning the selector switch to the RUN position, however in some cases depending on which engine and governor you had the Fuel ON output from the controller was still needed. They put these panels on a lot of different engine and generator combinations, so the exact operation depends a lot on what is installed.

Your best bet is to contact FG Wilson thru your local dealer and get the correct documentation for your unit.

There are a couple of retrofit options I know of, I pretty sure DIEF or one of their bigger dealers was providing a retrofit kit, and there are a couple of China sources for panel assemblies.

Hope that helps, MikeL.
