File Load Failure

Greetings,

I have created an assembly and saved it a number of times. My assembly reaches into many different folders to pick out some of my company's "stock parts". One of those folders recently changed name, from "42" to "42 (Bearings)". Now when I open an assembly using parts in that folder, I get the "File Load Failure" message. I know a "round-about" and inefficient way of locating the file. But, this happens quite frequently. What is the most efficient way of re-linking the part to the correct file?

A valuable lesson learned here I hope - you can't just change a folder name and expect everything to re-link.
I once made the analogy that its like moving house, not telling anyone, then expecting your mail to find you.

Fortunately you have a number of ways to correct things -
If you only have one or two files to correct you can either use the Replace command in Revision Manager or when you've opened the assembly file in Solid Edge.

If there are many then its going to be Revision Manager (View and Markup).

Start Menu > All Programs > Solid Edge xx > View and Markup.
When View and Markup opens go to Tools > Link Management > Redefine Links

Select the folder(s) where your assemblies are located, then click Next.
On the next screen you can enter the old path name in the Current Link Path field, and the new path name in the Redefine Link Path To field.

In your case something like

C:\Folderxxxx\42 and C:\Folderxxxx\42 (Bearings) respectively.

Then click next and it will go through all the files in the folder (and sub-folders) and correct the old link to the new one.
By the way I wouldn't use () in folder names.

Glad to help.
A company I worked for recently had to do a similar exercise when they installed a new server and moved all the CAD stuff over to it - and that was thousands of files.
This is why I believe its important not to have too many levels to a folder structure, and not to split things up into too many folders.

RevisionManager (View&Markup, InsightConnect) also has a function called "Redefine Links" for mass file path changes and fix-up.
