Renaming files in UG seems to be a nightmare if you don't do it right.

Can someone tell me the correct way to rename a part file that's a template for a family of parts and also maintain the links that this family and template have to various assemblies.

I've tried opening all files (assemblies and families) and do a "save as" which works for updating the assemblies but the family of parts files balk at it saying they are read-only.

Is there a utility out there that allows you to rename a file and update the links? Solidworks Explorer does this for Solidworks files, is there not something similiar? Hard to imagine that the "High" end system here has such difficultly doing a simple thing when the supposed "inferior" system can do it easily. Perhaps it's the user so please advise all.

I don't think the mid-ramge packages cvan be called "inferior", just not as completely integrated for an total design through manufacturing system.

Do you have write privileges to the members of the family table? My users can't rename the family tables or thier memebers.

The family members open read-only, the only way to change them is thru the template part which is fine wth me. Problem is if I "save as", I would expect an option to bring the family parts along for the ride. Instead they will no longer update unless I give them another name as well.

As long as you don't have write access to the family members, you will not be able to do a save as to the master file. How do you have 2 masters each with the same family member part names? This is why you have to rename the family members along with the master.

How do I get write access to the family parts? The online help says that the family members are read-only.

From the help-----
Family member:
A read-only part file created from, and associated with, a template part and family table.
------------------------

So I do have access in the sense that I can change the parameters in the template file and "update" the family members which updates and saves them automatically. But renaming the template file breaks the associativity and gives no option to retain it.

Hi Gildashard,

Yes, NX maintains a "soft" read-only attribute on all part family members. I found a trick though, that might help in your case: It is possible to save part family members into another directory as long as the name is kept the same.

If you want to do this to a bunch of files, you could use the free "Save All As" utility I have posted on SolidNX.com.

Cheers,
