Hey, i find it deppends greatly on the Number of Key files (Table enteries in the Data base) threads, chamfers, lofts all those good things etc.

I just did a survey of about 3000 Inventor part files and the majority of them were under 700k... Below is the breakdown... The file size range with the least number of files will come first followed by second smallest and so on. Of course this could be heavily influenced by the type of parts we model where I work, so take this for what it's worth.

1-99k (only 6 parts)
600-999k (38 parts)
1000k+ (38 parts)
500-599 (50 parts)
400-499 (90 parts)
300-399 (243 parts)
200-299 (1162 parts)
100-199 (1322 parts)

So it seems that most parts are in the range of 100-500k. Of course it's largely dependent on what kind of parts you're modeling. But I would like to see if this kind of trend is present no matter what type of parts are being created... Perhaps someone can do a quick survey of about 3000 parts and see if there is any correlation between file size and the number of parts. Are there a lot more smaller sized parts than larger ones?

I would say that most of my parts are 200-500K also.

Assemblies range a lot more (and really depends on #of parts, patterns, and constraints)

.idw files will grow very fast with addition of iso views, (even more with shaded), detail views, sections of details, etc....I have an idw file that is 5MB from an assembly that is around 450K.

The number of files (and associated disk space) grows extremely fast once you start using it full time.
