I am wondering about the logistics of filling in an indoor swimming pool, and then covering it in some form of flooring to utilise the space as an extra room. I would assume that sand would be the best material to use to fill it. I was also thinking of possibly laying a floor system directly over the sand. Has anyone dealt with anything like this before?

How big is the pool? The logistics of getting sand inside the building to fill the pool could be significant. It would also preclude returning the pool to use in the future.

If the span is not too large you could simply place a wood frame floor over the pool. Intermediate supports could be used as necessary. The void created could be used as a basement.
