Wondering if anyone can help me with this. I need the formula to solve this equation for x.

25.8443=arctangent of x/12

Thanks dawg. I knew it had to be a simple transition.

Is that

25.8443=arctan(x/12)

or

25.8443=[arctangent(x)]/12

Actually, Mike, I was wondering what was going on in thorny's trig class.

"And how long has your calculator been broken??"

Just wanted to see what the equation looked like with x isolated. The calculator comes in play after I understand the method.

ACtrafficengr, It's 25.8443=arctan(x/12). I just couldn't remember how to move the arctan to the other side.

AC - good point -----

If you don't understand - pull out the old TRIG book and warm it
up!!

I do these in my sleep trying to got to sleep.

Nice Mike. I don't have time to do trig while I'm sleeping, too busy writing spreadsheets. I should give it a try tho. Seems like it'd be a lot easier. I might get some rest!

Basically you take the tangent of both sides knowing that this does not change the quality. tan of arctan cancels out and then you multiply both sides by 12 and voila!

I guess the formula for the lead angle of threads, if you are after the lead angle or any of unknown in the formula, shoud be:

tan(lamdha)= pitch/(pi*pitch diameter)

Otherwise you need to define the angle you are using.

Kind regards,

Thanks for the replies. I needed this formula for a spreadsheet. I used it, among others, to find the pitch of a valley rafter. In this case the two roofs that form the valley do not have like pitches. It works fine.

Thanks again.
