What are the criterias that that to be considered to identify locations for installing fire dampers in HVAC system.

Where your ducts and openings pass through a fire separation as determined by the architect a fire damper is required.

In some instances you can run your duct within a fire-rated enclosure passing through a rated room and avoid the fire damper. The enclosure effectively creates a space outside of the rated room.

IMC has 2 definitions ..... fire barriers and fire partitions ........ also sprinklered and non-sprinklered

I spec UL-555 dynamic rated dampers with the curtain out of the airstream

There is an example drawing in NFPA 90A that gives many common duct and damper possibilities. Good info in a small (one page) package!
