Hi folks,

Just want to confirm if i need a jockey pump when i only have to supply fire hose cabinets for a 4-storey office building. do i need jockey pump when i have automatic-wet or automatic-dry standpipes design? and what if i design a Semi-automatic dry type of standpipe? do i really need a jockey pump?

thanks,

You only need a jockey pump if you have a fire pump.

I suspect you are asking if the standpipes must be manual or automatic for a 4 story and the answer is 'it depends'.

Hi sir!

The system have a fire pump and the design of the standpipe is a dry type standpipe system (there is no water inside the pipe) it also have its own fire reserve. do i need to add jockey pump? or where do i need to add jockey pump if only standpipes will be the protection of the building? thanks for your help sir.

Will the fire pump start automatically via drop in pressure OR started manually by say the fire department or fire brigade? If automatic starting a jockey pump is required to prevent the fire pump from starting because of say a small leak. An automatic starting fire pump should be connected electronically to the fire department. The jockey pump will prevent false alarms to the FD.

If the system has a fire pump then you need a jockey pump.

If a fire pump is already there it should have a jockey pump. Refer to NFPA 20 for how to provide a jockey pump.

@LCREP

the fire pump is intended to run if the fdas detects a fire. can this design work? the pipes will be totally empty no air or water inside. i think the designer design the system that way thats why it has no jockey pump.

ME. Engr, you have to think about the purpose of a jockey pump and LCREP has alluded to it. Also if you have a widely range of pressure changes at the supply side, a jockey pump will control false alarms to the automatic fire protection system.
