Does anyone know of a fire proofing that may be applied to FRP composites (carbon-based with epoxy matrix for strengthening retrofit on structural elements)? Is there any UL tested system available? Any information would be appreciated.

Yes, FYFE has a UL-tested/listed fire rating system upto 4 hours. Named Tyfo® Advanced Fire Protection (AFP) System.

See website at for details.

The supply and installation of the fire rating system alone can exceed the cost of the FRP application.

My guess is that the Fyfe system is UL-listed based upon testing on their FRP laminates, so applying the AFP to another non-Fyfe composite may not make it UL-equivalent.

The problem is, Sika has provided the external FRP composite reinforcement and we cannot use the Fyfe AFP system - does anyone know if Sika has used a certain fire-proofing before on thier applied composites?

I think SIka have only a ASTM-E84 "smoke and flame spread" coating.

If you are in the USA, give David White a call at Sika in New Jersey - he is (was?) a tech guy on their composites. Or call A.B. (he goes by his initials) at Sika at US corporate office - they would know what is available re fire systems.

Fyfe Company in California has a UL approve fireproofing for composites. They are the only ones who have it. They hav e a 4 hour assembply for columns and a 2 hour for slabs I thinnk. Call Pete Milligan at Fyfe. Their URL is fyfeco.com. Tell Pete that eric says hi. E-
