Hello all,
I am preparing plans for a client who is doing a 24x35 addition onto an exisitng truck garage. he wants to use a pole buildingsince the existing build. ia a pole structure. the building inspector told him the common wall must be fire rated but would not spec what rating..1, 2 or 3.
does anyone have any recommendations for how many layers of fire rock would give a 2 hour rating? the addition will be a storage area with heaters. the job is in upstate NY. thanks for any help.

You have to look at the code and find out what separation is required between various occupancies.

If the IBC-03 governs, then use chapter 3 to determine occupancies and read Section 302.3.2 for required fire rating of OSW.

Check chapter 7 (Fire Resistance-Rated-Construction) to see if what you propose to do will give you the required fire rating. UL also has pertinent info in this regard.
