Having installed additional cables into a substation, I now need to re patch the fire resistant material which seals the cable entries.
Any recommendations for suitable material?

Recommended for you

- fireproof concrete;
- asbestos (worst part is that it is carcinogenic and banned it to how I know);
- poleoretanova fireproof foam.

Good luck!

I did once a Design Criteria for Fire Stops as follows:
CABLE RACEWAY FIRE STOP MATERIALS DESIGN CRITERIA
CABLE RACEWAY FIRE STOP MATERIALS THEY ARE THE MATERIALS REQUIRED TO ACHIEVE CABLE PENETRATION FIRE STOPS. THE FIRE STOP SHOULD PREVENT FIRE PROPAGATION ALONG A CABLE SYSTEM THROUGH A FIRE-RATED WALL , FLOOR , OR FLOOR-CEILING BARRIER WHILE MAINTAINING THE INTEGRITY OF THE FIRE BARRIER THROUGH WHICH THE CABLE SYSTEM PENETRATES.
THE FIRE STOP SHALL WITHSTAND THE APPROPRIATE TEST AS PER NFPA 251 OR UL 263 AND OTHER REGULATION AND SHALL BE APPROVED FOR THIS APPLICATION.
A) THE FIRE STOP MATERIAL SHALL COMPLY WITH: ASTM E 814 or UL 1479
1) THE MATERIAL USED TO BUILD THE FIRE STOP SHALL BE COMPATIBLE PHYSICALLY AND CHEMICALLY WITH THE CABLE COVERING AND RACEWAY MATERIALS.
2) THE DERATING OF CABLE AMPACITY DUE TO HEAT DISSIPATION RESULTING IN POWER CABLE AT FIRE STOPS SHALL BE AVOIDED.
3) THERMAL EXPANSION, WHICH MAY CRUSH INSULATION OR JACKET DURING INSTALLATION AND OPERATION SHALL BE AVOIDED.
4) TOXIC OR CORROSIVE GASES DEVELOPED DURING INSTALLATION OR DURING A FIRE SHALL BE AVOIDED.
5) THE FIRE STOPS SHALL BE ABLE TO WITHSTAND PRESSURE DIFFERENTIALS.
6) THE MATERIALS SHALL SHOW A MINIMUM AGING IN FUNCTION.
7) NO TEMPERATURE RISE SHALL DEVELOP DURING CURING OF MATERIAL
8) EASE OF INSTALLATION SHALL BE CONSIDERED.
9) POSSIBILITY OF INSTALLATION OF ADDITIONAL CABLES SHALL BE PROVIDED.
10) THE FIRE STOP SHALL WITHSTAND THE HOSE-STREAM TEST.
B) THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS WILL COMPLETE THE CRITERIA:
1) ALL THE OPENING HAS TO BE WELL SEALED AGAINST FIRE , WATER AND SMOKE PENETRATION BEFORE THE FIRE WILL REACH THE OPENING LOCATION . IF INTUMESCENT MATERIAL WILL BE PROPOSED , THE MANUFACTURER SHALL SUBMIT AN APPROVAL DOCUMENT FROM A NEUTRAL AUTHORITY LABORATORY AS UL , FM OR OTHER , THAT SHALL CERTIFY WITHOUT DOUBT THE FIRE STOP WILL BE WELL SEALED EVEN NO FIRE IS IN VICINITY.
2) NO CEMENT INGREDIENT MATERIAL SHALL BE PERMITTED IN ORDER TO AVOID COPPER GROUND CORROSION AND DANGEROUS EXPOSURE OF PERSONAL AND EQUIPMENT WHILE WORKING. NO POWDERED MATERIAL SHALL BE USED IN ORDER TO PREPARE THE FILLING MATERIAL ON SITE. THE MATERIAL SHALL BE DELIVERED READY TO USE ON SITE.
3) NO WORK FORM OF COMBUSTIBLE MATERIAL SHALL BE EMPLOYED, AS THE DISMOUNTING WORK MAY EXPOSE THE CABLES TO MECHANICAL ABUSE.
4) NO CABLE CLEANING SHALL BE NECESSARY IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE A SUITABLE FIRE STOPS . A ROUGH REMOVAL OF DUST OR GREASE MAY BE REQUIRED.
5) NO GAP BETWEEN CABLES SHALL BE REQUIRED IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE A GOOD SEALING AGAINST SMOKE PENETRATION.
6) THE FIRE STOP AT ITS FINAL STATE SHALL BE RESISTANT TO BE WALKED ON.
7) THE MATERIAL SHALL BE COMPATIBLE FOR CONTACT WITH THE CABLE OUTER SHEATH SO THE CURING PROCESS SHALL NOT BE DISTURBED . A GOOD ADHERENCE
OF THE MATERIAL TO CABLE SHALL BE ACHIEVED.
8) THE FIRE RESISTANCE OF FIRE STOPS SHALL BE OF 3 HOURS MINIMUM.
C)CABLE COATING FOR FLAME RETARDANT PROPERTY IMPROVING SHALL BE NECESSARY IF THE CABLE DOES NOT MEET THE FLAME PROPAGATION TEST AS PER NFPA 701 or IEC 60332-1. IN THIS CASE CABLE FIRE BREAKS SHOULD BE INSTALLED

Does any known material meet your criteria? If so what?

I used this two systems:
A.General Electric Company. RTV Silicone Rubber
This is very good if it is well installed. It is also very expensive.
B.Flame-Safe FS500, FST600, FS900, FST900, or FSP1000.
However I get good recommendations about these:
C. Dow Corning Silicone RTV Foam.
D. 3M Fire Barrier Penetration Sealing Systems.

Thanks 7anoter4.

Nice, 7anoter4. I would add that 3M's selection guide is really great.

Best to you,

simisteven,

I have had success with CSD's product's, they also work in conjunction with other popular fire stop product manufacturers. Try: . They are represented in the UK by Thorne & Derrick UK. In the States by CSD Sealing Systems North America LLC. They offer a product they call CSD Sealing Systems Actifoam Firestop. Take a look at them, they are very helpfull if you inquire directly.

Regards,
EEJaime
