I do not think it is used or used much.

But, I am just trying to find either the piping diagram or a picture of the shut off, on the outside of an elevator shaft.

I forgot along time ago where I did see it. I thought it was in the old 13, but maybe something else??

Butterball valves are commonly used for protecting elevator shafts. Typically you'll see a flow switch with zero retard as well.

We use them quite a bit. Especially since I cannot get a clear answer from the elevator types on belt/cable composition. I therefore default to combustible.

Not sure there has ever been a diagram in 13 or other codes. Might be something you saw on a plan or the like.

Each one is different, but basically it is just 1" pipe, with a tampered "Butterball" in-line.

I might could scrape up a pic of one of ours...
