Dear all,

Its not very long ago that I am into valve engineering and I am finding problems to understand some matters of fire test in valves. How can it be that we are asking for an API 609 soft seated valve that acomplish requirements of API 607, as far as I know PTFE should not be used with temperatures above 200ºC, thus how can it stand temperatures between 750 and 1000ºC without burning the seat?

Thanks in advance!

It normally does burn out the seat. Purpose of the test is to prove that the valve has reasonably tight shut-off after exposure to fire so that the amount of leakage does not continue to expand the size of the fire.

Soft-seated valves normally have back-up metal-to-metal contact surfaces inside or back-up graphite seals to provide some measure of shut-off after the plastic parts are burned.
