Fire testing of EPDM/Rubber lined Butterfly valve

As per clien't specification, Wafer Butterfly valve (EPDM lined) shall be pressure to API 607. When we forwarded the same to our vendor, our vendor' clarification as follows:
"EPDM/Rubber lined Butterfly valve is not fire safe since it cannot be fire tested."


Instead they submitted "certificate of fire approval" from Lloyd Register which was not accepted by client. Client insisting for fire test as per API 607.

Any suggestion/advice would be much appreciated.

What did the 'Certificate of Fire Approval' say about the standard it was performed too?

In genenral, EPDM lined BFV cannot withstand the test conditions of API 607. Rubber wil definitely deform at it upper temp. limit and even melt down. I have seen rubber-lined manufacturers having DOD certificate as well. But not API 607 so far.

Could you please give me any code reference for "Excemption of fire testing for EPDM/Rubber lined valves.

API 609 and API 607 std for Butterfly valve and fire testing of soft seated valve respectively do not adress about fire testing of EPDM lined valves in particular rather it is general.

Hi Gafoorkti.
Of course there is fire safe butterfly valve designed in accordance with API607. This type is called high performance butterfly valve. The valve your vendor supply is the normal butterfly valve. If necessary, maybe I can give the drawing for the fire safe structure.

Hi gafoorkti,

Something in the underlying description is missing either on your side as overseen or not submitted from your customer, or not clarly described from your customer.

As Intotherain says, a high-performance BFL is required for firesafe services. A customer used to this standard will often be 'unprecise' in his description, or not describe in detail what he wants or may have 'hidden' for you as cross references or in standards the details you need. All papers may, or may not, have been sent to you.

Advice: ask your customer for clarification, and if relevant/necessary a detailed example of what construction or manufacturor/model he has used before.
