@SenFeinstein Can you have Michael Avenatti cross examine Kavanaugh?

zdas04,

Back in 1991, during the Clarence Thomas hearings, the FBI wasn't investigating a federal crime but rather was simply reopening the background-check process. That is all that was being asked for in this situation. Why are things different today?

At least we agree on one thing, this REPUBLICAN controlled committee is a "media circus".

As for your suggestion that Dr. Ford take this up with the local police authorities in Maryland, perhaps she should. After all, there is NO statute-of-limitations for sexual assault in the State of Maryland.

Any police force in this country would laugh her out of the building. One cop I happened to be talking to last week said he's send her to a doctor for a rape kit (he was drinking at the time). There is no evidence except an extremely well coached allegation. There is physical evidence (Judge Kavanagh's diaries) that there was no time that summer for this "gathering". This witness is simply not credible.

"Any police force in this country would laugh her out of the building."

That sums up one problem in the US. Yet, we have sympathy for the men who come forward 30 yrs after being abused by priests, don't we? Why don't we demand that they should have gone to the police when they were actively being abused?

IRStuff,
Interesting question. I wish I had an answer. The pedophile priest problem usually has multiple similar reports from victims over a number of years. A single person reporting an incident from 30 years may generate questions of the victim's peers, but without corroboration the case is dropped. In this case basically everyone in multiple schools have come forward denying the accused behavior.

It's pretty obvious that one of the protagonists has committed felony perjury... the FBI does not need White House approval to investigate now. If they weren't politically motivated, they should step in.

I would love to watch and hear the body language and demeanour of Mark Judge being interviewed under oath under the same rules as Ford and Kavanaugh were. That would give "the people" 50% more data to decide this he said/she said fiasco.

dik,

If the FBI takes this on on their own, I bet we hear someone say "you're fired!" PDQ.

These things are invariably demoralizing, given the level of misogyny that exists in our culture. It almost seems like we should implant everyone from birth with a bodycam, so that our wives and daughters never have to deal with that situation and not have "corroborating evidence."

Now that there is going to be an FBI investigation, will you Democrats be satisfied?

And so will a lot of Republicans...

Whatever the outcome, it will be good for the nation because it will have been an independent, nonpartisan review of the facts, and I do mean FACTS.

I take that as a yes, and that you will have no further objections to the process.

I concur, but, if investigating a felony, the White House doesn't have to provide permission... the FBI can act on its own.

REALLY political, I agree... Firing an FBI guy is almost obstruction of justice... another felony to heap on the Donald... I have never seen partisan politics to the extent that it could ruin the country in the long run... other than a banana republic... I really (and sincerely) feel sorry for you guys.

If the FBI acts on its own following up on a felony. Two people have testified under oath to different things. The scope can be 'broad'. If asked to investigate, then the scope can be really limited. As latexman notes, the latter is fraught with career limiting conditions.

dik,
To whom do you direct your sympathy? Many of us don't need or want it.

Hokie... that is likely part of the problem...

I'm having trouble categorizing your political leanings. I know John Baker, IRstuff, bimr, and a few others are lefties, but I didn't realize you leaned that way.

ROTFLOL, I used to think I was a relatively centrist Republican, but it seems the "party" is so far to the right that more than half the party is now "lefties."

Liberal Republican actually used to be a thing. But that was before way too much kool-aid was consumed.

Hokie... I'm a conservative, but, with a very strong social conscience. There's no reason that Cuba should have a lower infant mortality rate than the US. Something's fukt.

Dik

dik,
That's quite a segue, from one song to another. I thought we were talking about the Supreme Court. Infant mortality is another subject, and there are lots of reasons for it, but no excuses.
