If I need to weld two members together and has a large radius, can I specify a backer rod to fill in the void provided the weld attaches the rod to both members and extends over the top of the backer rod?

It's no longer a flare-bevel weld.

It's something else, and will behave differently than a flare-bevel.

What code are you under for your welding procedure?

Can you come back with some more information sizes and material?

A rod isn't normally used for a backing ring. Look at the site below for some acceptable shapes for backing rings.
Most codes require that if you use a backing ring you have to use a welding procedure that qualifies the use of same.

The connection is similar to Fibure 8-18 on page 8-24 of the AISC Manual 13th edition. The contractor wants to add a channel to each side of a tube column. The web of the channel will be next to the column and the flang will be flush with the column.

mdale,
What you are proposing may prove highly similar to slugging a weld in actual practice, resulting in cracking and weld failure in service (depending on the service conditions). As a general rule, I would recommend against it.
