Hello All,
Does anybody know if having a FKOD is mandatory or not? What is wrong with connecting two vessels directly to FLARE?
Reference to API or ASME is preferred.
Thanks

Mandatory normally means legislation.... so no.

A FKOD is there to protect the flare from high velocity liquid droplets or slugs of liquid arriving and destroying the rather more delicate flare tips or burners.

If the vessels are purely gas phase and there is no liquid drop out or condensation then maybe you don't need one.

Often though when in purely purge mode / low flow, gases can condense. Then when the relief valves go off this liquid gets picked up and blown at high speed into the flare.

So it is very process dependant.

If you plan to go direct to flare from these 2 vessels, then you have to demonstrate that all operational and emergency vent streams from these 2 vessels is always superheated, preferably with a healthy distance away from the dewpoint temperature.
