Hi-I am trying to specify a ground flush J-groove weld. I was wondering if there is any strength reduction by specifying a ground flush on a J-groove weld since some of the weld will be ground off?

Thanks in advance.

You can ground as flush you need, the weld strength will be considered by the Code anyway to the maximum of parent's thickness, with the caveat that the thinner parent will determine the weld thickness.

gr2vessels is dead on, you get no allowance for the extra weld above the thinner parent material.
