Can anyone guess why Flush type shell connection is named so? Is it because it is flush with Bottom plate /annular plate .Figure 5.14 of API 650 standard 13th edition

GUESS ? I think the Figure 5-14 and item 5.7.8.1 are more than clear...Copy and paste of item 5.7.8.1;

(...5.7.8.1 Tanks may have flush-type connections at the lower edge of the shell. Each connection may be made flush with the flat
bottom
under the following conditions (see Figure 5-14):)

(flush with something (of two surfaces) completely level with each other ..Make sure the paving stones are flush with the lawn. Ref:
Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary App )

Correct, confusing because in common usage "flush" relates more to flushing a toilet, and that kind of operation has no connection to flush-type fittings.

Hi

Coming from the tank cleaning industry, I always understood the word flush as something that can be swept away with a broom. That´s actually what a flush type manhole allows. BTW tank cleaning with manual tools is one of the hardest jobs.

If we need more information, check this wiktionary definition

Noun
flush (plural flushes)
A sudden flowing; a rush which fills or overflows, as of water for cleansing purposes

@HTURKAK

What you have posted is perfectly understandable to me, it is the ONLY explanation regarding weld joints for tanks / vessels / piping / etc.

But there seem to be other extra-ordinary, out of context explanations.

Maybe silence is golden for us?

I fully agree with you.. Sometimes silence is golden. Good statement a pink star for this saying...English is not my first language and i know that, this is one of the words which has a lot of meanings. This word can be noun, adjective, verb..etc..In this case , it is an adjective..

I think , the code writers should consider and find another suitable word which clearly defines the situation.

But i think we are free to use or propose some other words, below two of them ;

- FOB type shell connection ( Flat on bottom type shell connection ) ???

- BOSS type shell connection ( Bottom soffit similar type shell connection ) ???

API 650 uses the word "flush" in several places other then flush-type connections. It is clearly meant throughout the standard to mean surfaces that are in the same plane.

True.. imo, the code writers may add this definition :

FLUSH =The surfaces that are in the same plane .

but have a look to

SECTION 3—DEFINITIONS

3.8 flush-stacked on the inside: The inside surfaces of plates in all shell courses coincide.

Dear Esteemed Members,

Thanks for all your valuable replies.

Dear HTURKAK , English is not my mother tongue. I understand that Guess is not the correct word to use in this situation
