I'm using NX4, am learning UG and have never used any previous releases. Can someone explain the use of "visible in view" settings?

Often, when dealing with a file, looking for some small glitch or other reason for a problem in a model, coworkers suggest toggling the visible in view settings to see if the suspect issue is not being currently shown.

After changing these settings, the layer control tool no longer functions as intended and is rendered useless by the over-riding visible in view settings.

The question is why don't these two commands play well together? Is there some inheirant purpose or am I using the commands wrong?

And how do I make the layer control tool retain its function after changing the visible in view settings? I've tried the reset to global button but don't see any effect.

Visible in view is useful in drafting when you have entities that you don't want visible. It is bad practice to screw around with canned model views with regard to visible in view, as you have found out.

The only reason that it still even works with normal modeling views is because it's a legacy issue from the pre-V10 era, when modeling views were also used for drawing views. If I had my way, I would change the functionality so that it could only be used with Drafting views, since that is the only place where this has any value whatsoever.

Good morning John,
I respectfully disagree. Many users, including myself, use Visible in View in modeling mode. However, I never use it with the "canned views". My practice is to create a custom view named Work (sometimes more than one), with which I do all my modeling. This leaves the other views pristine for future users.
The benefit of using Visible in View in model is simple. With all layers set to selectable, I control what is shown in my model view with only one toggle: shift+control V.
This avoids the problem of going to the Drawing and being unable to select a feature for dimensioning because its layer is not selectable, then having to figure out which layer(s) to make selectable.
When I am preparing a view for the drawing, I make visible only the appropriate layers. Then the view goes to the drawing with no further alterations required. Although this may seem an odd practice to some, it works quite well.

The robust functionality of UG provides the opportunity for each user to determine the best methods for his/her own particular style. This is what makes UG superior to other programs, such as Catia.
BTW, I have been using UG since V9.

Respectfully,
'ziner
