Hi All,

I m working on design of foundation for horizontal wood grinders. have anyone use that rule of thumb for machine foundation design that (mass of foundation should be 3 times mass of machine).
machine weight 94000 lbs
any reference would be great.

thank you

Best bet is to contact the engineering department of the manufacturer. They'll be able to tell you what they assumed for the operation of their machine. It's possible they assumed the base would be isolated, and so fixing it to a massive foundation may be detrimental to the performance of the equipment.

based of manufacturer drawing the plates are pre-drilled to be anchor to foundation.

Abdel22 - See ACI 351.3R "Report on Foundations For Dynamic Equipment".

Here is an independent outline of important criteria: Foundations For Vibrating Machines.

Note that the concept for a block foundation is to make the block rigid. This means requirements have to be taken as guidelines, not a "recipe" for a design.
For example, if the footprint of the machine is "large", a foundation that is "3 times mass of machine" may be too "thin" for rigidity... foundation may have to be "thicker" to make it rigid (making it heavier).

Thank you for input.
the grinders will be anchor in four spot on 2'x2' plates at area 12'x10'
i was thinking about mat( 14'x12') under footing instead of big block.
