Hi, I am conducting a 2d cutting simulation of a certain material, and I calculated the fracture energy from the shear stress-strain curve according to this formula provided by abaqus documentation.

And so, by taking the area under graph from strain (0,pl) to strain (f,pl)(coloured in red), then mutiply by the characteristic length of the element, I should get the correct value.

My values are 49.6 (N/mm^2) x 0.001 (mm) = 0.0496 (N/mm)
My elements are very small (0.001mm).

However, this 0.0496 (N/mm) fracture energy is too small that the elements got deleted right away after contact and the cutting force is way too low compared to experimental results.

I wonder if I left out something and any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much.

You may have to adjust the material properties a bit or increase mesh size. That’s a common approach when trying to achieve the desired results of analyses with material damage.

Hi FEA way,

noted, I will try to adjust the value of fracture energy. thank you very much.
