What are the indications from fractured surface?

Good old brittle cast iron. Lucky its a small cheap engine block.
 
Yeah funny stuff, the youtube video, and a huge waste of money. And whats even better is when you see these so called diesel wizards now building these pulling engines with the (fancy catch word)BILLET aluminum blocks.
 
The main bearing cap needs to be tied to the cylinder head. Usually this is done through the block. Newton's law, the pressure pushing down on the crank through the piston is also pushing the head up. Tie rods could be used instead and the block would play no part. However, this is a huge tangent from the OP...
 
I think we ae overlooking the obvious explanation here. The LAPD were testing their new blast containment vessel.
