Does anyone have a reference for designing a free-standing bridge crane system. I am not able to utilize a building column inorder to brace the runway beam/channel. So my span for side thrust loads would be 68ft which is longer than I care to have. Please advise

can you provide more details? is the crane inside of a building or outside in open yard?

Regards,
Lutfi

I've seen tapered columns (thicker at the bottom than at the top) used for free standing bridge cranes. The foundations get large, but if you can't brace to a building column, you have to handle it with the column section and the foundation.

Another design option I've seen is to set another smaller column a few feet away from the crane support frame column (in the direction of the lateral load). The two are laced up with bracing, making a kind of vertical truss. This avoids having to construct a tapered section and spreads out the reaction at the foundation.

It might be practical to consider a gantry crane.

How about using a horizontal beam between the tops of the columns to create a frame? The beam would be parallel to the crane span. Or if that is not feasible then a diagonal member from the top of the column down to the foundation to take out the lateral load.
