Hey Guys,

When you have a freestanding wood post or a freestanding wood framed out stud column, do you have your pedestal above the ground some distance? How much and why? Is it just to help prevent moisture damage?

Thank you!

I'm looking at IBC '18 Sections 2304.12.1.1 through 2304.12.2.2.

The code requires 'durable or preservative treated wood' in a whole variety of situations when the wood is too close to exposed earth.

So the section of posts or columns... For example 2304.12.2.2 :
All posts supported by concrete which is in contact with earth shall be durable or preservative treated lumber.
Except:
1. Posts not directly exposed to weather.
2. Supported 1" above and moisture isolated from the finish.
3. Are not less than 8" above exposed earth.
All of Items 1 through 3 of the exception must be true or the column needs to be durable/PT.
