Friction User Model : why is it taking so long ?

Hello,

I am having trouble with some contact model. I am studying a simple case = elastic cylinder over rigid plane.

The normal load is a uniform negative normal displacement at the upper end of the cylinder. The tangential load is an in-plane displacement applied at the same location. The normal contact is defined as hard direct to minimize the penetration of the slave nodes inside the master surface.

My problem is the following :

- With Coulomb friction model, the job runs without any problem and it takes only a few minutes

- With Static exponential decay model, the job runs but it is very slow. The time increment goes down to 10-8/10-9 s. So the job is going to take at least one week to complete

- With a user defined friction model (FRIC subroutine), it is also very long.

My questions are :

- Why is it taking so long when I use other models than the Coulomb friction model ? I do not understand why the time increment has to be so small.

- Is there some way to "help" Abaqus complete the job more quickly ? I tried the stabilisation option but with no success.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Rémi
