Anyone know what the frost depth is in middle to lower part of Alabama near Mississippi? This is in an area where there is no local jurisdiction.

The 1999 Standard Building Code shows the entire state's frost penetration as 2 inches.

I will keep looking for another reference.

Two good references are the local building inspector and the local grave digger.

12" conservative max frost depth. A typical spread footing at the perimeter of the building will have 12" of cover and be 12" thick...well below frost depth. I typically keep 12" of cover even in Florida.

Wow, off the topic a bit, but I didn't know it got cold enough long enough for the soil to actually freeze in AL or FL. More than a fraction of an inch or so that is.

Call ANY code authority in Alabama...specifically northern AL - like Huntsville. Probably about 12''
