Guys, how do you characterize full tension compression splices as to its electrical resistance and temperature measurement? Are there standards as to the limits of its resistance and temperatures? Thanks in advance.

Resistance should not exceed the conductor characteristics. Temperature limitations are based on mfg. datasheets. For some conductor thermal uprating projects we did have to replace certain splices and connections.

Thanks apowerengr. However, did you use any criteria or standards in determining the pass and fail condition of these joints? Are there bounderies of measured resistance? By what percent to that of the conductor resistance?

NEMA CC1 (Electric Power Connection for Substations) says the temperature shall not exceed that of the conductor at 100, 125, and 150% rated capacity.

Are you asking about a field acceptance test? The NEMA test would be a type test done by the manufacturer. It would not be practicable as a field test.

I don't think any field acceptance test would normally be done except for inspection to ensure that the compression was complete and smooth. See for installation instructions. Typically we require in construction specs only that the manufacturers' installation instructions be followed and thay the splices be inspected.

Thanks jghrist. Actually, we are doing resistance test and temperature test on these joints. We are also computing for the ratios of joint resistance against conductor and also temperature ratios. Our main concern is in the evaluation of computed ratios. To date, I am trying to find out if there are industrial standards for these. Otherwise we will just be making our own.
