What is the main difference between welded wire fabric gabions and double twisted hexagonal mesh gabions. Is the twisted hexagonal mesh stronger/more durable/more desireable? Why?

The welded wire and mesh salesmen will both tell you their's are the best. The welded wire gabions are definitely less flexible than mesh gabions. Mesh gabions are better for areas where settlement, erosion, or other earth movements are likely. Welded wire gabions may be cheaper and a little easier to install, probably best used for retaining wall structures where settlement is unlikely.

both must meet strength requirements, however - i feel that the twisted construction provides a little redundancy that the weld doesn't

they both are flexible when filled with rock, however, during hand fabrication of the baskets, the welded wire is much stiffer

modular construction of welded panels may eliminate common walls between baskets

both are easily field fabricated to fit the site

speed of installation and cost are very similar for both products

twisted mesh gabions have been used for over 100 years, welded wire fabric is relatively new

hog rings can be used for either type, but care should be used in fastening lids when the gabion is full of rock. lacing wire or spirals is better. hog rings can actually pull the weld apart when fastening the lid. Chuck

Does anyone know of a good source for gabion design/construction information?

Check w/Maccaferri Gabions. They sell both kinds and will tell you which is best for your application. They have probably been in business longer than anyone else in the business.

I was actually thinking more along the lines of a good text that shows how to design gabions for earth retention, bearing capacity. Anyone? Anyone?
