I have a roll and pin of D2 and S7 tool steels. Galling is a problem at the mating surfaces. Can this be related to the items being the same Rockwell hardness and if so, why? The hardness ranges are 58-62 Rc.

I have noticed in other manufacturing and tooling issues, galling is common. However my best preventative measure was with a silicon lubricant while processing materials such as aluminum. I'm not sure of your application and materials being processed, I have to suggest some experimentation with lubricants though.
