Galvanic Corrosion of Black Oxide bolt and Brass Insert 1

Hello,
I am trying to determine if galvanic corrosion is a factor between a brass insert and a 3/8 x 1.5" zinc plated steel bolt. The plate it will be bolted to is painted so it is not a factor. The anodic index of the brass is 0.4V, and it could be used in machine shops across the U.S.A.. The connection serves as a ground for a computer module also.

Galvanic corrosion requires the presence of water (conductor) to occur.

Your combination is used quite often with no problems. If there is a possibility that you will have moisture to accumulate at the connection a quick fix would be to use a brass fastener.

One thing to note is that today’s plain zinc plated fasteners vary quite a bite in quality. If you use zinc I would get a zinc plated fastener with a conversion coat on the zinc.
