Garbage Lateral Load

Can anybody point me to a publication somewhere that has lateral loads for garbage. I'm working with an incinerator complex with upwards of 80ft deep pits with interior walls that will only have garbage piled up against them and using a soil load seemed a little too conservative. Thanks in advance.

For a material, like garbage, with changing and unknown properties, I would say it's a good idea to be conservative.

A lot of lateral loads are garbage in my opinion, but we still have to use them.

Is the garbage going to be compacted?

If so, I would use a full soil load - 35 to 50 psf/ft at least depending on your framing system.

Agree with msquared48 - if the client can't provide rational usable numbers for you to design to, then go conservative, and assume it is loosely-piled soil. That's likely conservative enough. If the client balks, then tell them to give you better data for design. After all, they are the ones in the trash business - not you.
