Gas detector orientation

According to several suppliers' websites of gas detectors, a catalytic bead sensor must be installed vertically with the gas sensor pointing towards the ground.
If the gas sensor is not mounted in this way, they say, the gas sensor may not work correctly.

But why is this?
And is a horizontally orientated sensor a problem?

@DieterVk: Hope you are talking about Hydrocarbons i.e. Propane, Propane:Butane mix etc. This said because of the physical property of LPG. As the density of LPG Vapour is heavier than air, it will accumulate in the lower areas, hence the sensor must be facing downwards. Also it must be kept at height of 30cm from the ground level. For more clarifications have a look on NFPA58.
