Hello,
I have a gasket question. The procurment for a gasket was specified as 76" X 76 3/4" X 0.24" and also by the vendor part number. From the procurement description I concluded that the width of the gasket would be 3/4". The width of the gasket received is 3/8". The vendor states that the width should be 3/8" because you divide difference between the ID and OD by 2 to obtain the required width. This aligns with the material received and the vendor is an expert in gaskets. I am not challenging the vendor but the issue is being reviewed by people more knowledgeable than I for clarification of the requirements. I assumed the dimensions provided were for the gasket itself however the vendor is considering the size as related to the flange size.

From the specified procurement dimensions is there an understood convention that specifies the required width of the gasket? Is there literature available to help me understand gasket sizing better? Any comments/help would be appreciated.

Regards,
Van

With the dimensions you post the gasket width is 3/8*.

Gasket width is determined by the designer of the flange. One will normally pick the narrowest possible width based on required gasket sealing stress based on the gasket material, capability of the flange being able to provide such stress, and process capability. Other things enter into equation the type of flange.

Your 3/8" width seams a little narrow for that large of a flange.

Can you come back with the type of flange and gasket type and material?

Thanks Unclesyd,

I will come back with more information on the gasket material (will attempt to obtain flange type)on Monday.

I concur that the dimensions describe a 3/8" wide gasket X .24" thick to me.

But... I haven't seen a detailed drawing of the gasket. I can see how a drawing dimensioned from the centerline of the flange or whatever it is could result in a 3/4" wide gasket, but not as stated in the OP.

If you are in North America, check out the literature at:

All acceptable manufacturers imo, and all have a wealth of literature and expertise for designing, sizing, fabricating, and troubleshooting gaskets.

I also agree that by your original dimensions, the width of the gasket would be 3/8". We started specifying OD & ID of gasket, and OD/ID of any retaining rings on our BOM's to avoid such confusions.

The gasket info that I have is: special purpose, graphite filler, 304 ss. I do not have the flange type info but do know it is for an HX.
Thanks for the comments and reference info!
