I'm in the process of entrepreneurially developing a product on my own low budget that as part of it, requires the operation of an electronic latch / lock. In essence I need to be able to slide a lock slide about 1.5" horizontally, on DC battery power. I originally looked at a latching solenoid as a conceptually ideal unit, but the unit cost of solenoids as I understand it is higher than say, a cheap DC 12v gear motor. I'd love to use a linear actuator but they seem expensive.
Would the use of a small DC gear motor with a rack and pinion sort of configuration be among the cheapest solutions for sliding a bolt 1-2"? Wouldn't a worm gear configuration ultimately cost more? The force needed is low.
What are among the most cost efficient motor systems for a sliding lock /latch?
